The latest derivative
of
the Phoenix Aviation and Technologies new AUTOMATIC REAL-TIME CABLE
MONITORING AND ANALYSIS SYSTEM (ARCMAS) was recently flight tested.
The Portable Cable Diagnostic Unit (PCDU) was re-programed to detect
minuet changes in the wire properties caused by small changes in
surrounding
air temperature. The new system called Automatic Fire Detection and
Monitoring System (AFDAMS) used changes in temperature to detect
fires.
Unlike current systems that rely on smoke, this system detects very
small
changes to the properties of wire to determine the exact location of
fires
in hidden areas of the aircraft. AFDAMS detects, located and
monitors
the progression of fires, in areas normally not protected or accessible
by crew members in commercial aircraft.
Heat was applied to the
sensing wire and with in a second the cockpit alarm sounded and the
precise
location of the fire was shown on the Cockpit Display Unit (CDU)
enunciator
of the existing Securaplane ST3000 detection system. Securaplane's
advanced
wireless detection system was modified to receive four additional Smoke
Detector Units (SDU's), modified to except AFDAMS heat alarms.
The
system is designed to be installed in a short time under normal
maintenance.
Reducing system cost and investment in labor and materials.
Below Glenn Lacey, President & CEO of Phoenix Aviation Technologies, and the inventor is holding the AFDAMS equipped PCDU. Paul King looks over the display PCDU that provides details on fire suppression and flame spread in non accessible portions (Hidden Areas) of commercial aircraft. Exact Fire locations within one centimeter were logged using AFDAMS. Speed and Progress of simulated flame spread was measured as slow as 0.47 Cm/S. This test series will prove to be a great improvement in passenger safety, and can reduce false alarms in the cargo fire detection systems by 99 percent.

Below hidden fire was
simulated
by applying heat to a detector wire, this causes the PCDU to alarm and
activate the existing Securaplane cargo fire detection system. The AFDAMS
alarms and location of the simulated fire transmitted to the cockpit
via
one of four modified smoke detectors SDU's installed by the test team.
Lead test engineer, Joe Wolfe of NAVAIR TEAM Lakehurst, performs

checks by all installed experiments. Check back for further details as
